The world of athletics is in shock as World Record Marathon Holder Kelvin Kiptum perished in a car accident
on Sunday evening. Kiptum and his coach Gervais Hakizimana died in a head-on collision along Elgeyo Marakwet-Ravine road in the Kaptagat area of Uasin Gishu county.

According to Elgeyo Marakwet’s Police Commander Peter Mulinge, Kiptum lost control of the vehicle as
it veered off the road at high speed into a ditch for about 60 meters before crashing into a tree. In the police report, Kiptum and his Coach Gervais died on the spot. A third passenger, Sharon Kosgey, who was also on board suffered severe injuries and was rushed to the Racecourse Hospital for medical attention.

The damaged vehicle was towed to Kaptagat Police Station. Barely a week after the ratification of his record, Kiptum’s demise adds a sad note to the accolades that celebrated his achievements. He was set to open his new season in the Rotterdam Marathon on April 14th this year before joining the Kenyan team for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
