Massive losses as dawn fire razes Kangemi market stalls

Property worth millions of shillings was destroyed in a fire that razed stalls at Kangemi open-air market on Thursday.

Nick Thuo of Kenya Red Cross said the fire also burnt some residential houses that border the affected stalls. Nairobi county firefighters contained the inferno which broke out at around 3am from one of the shops.

Residents who responded to the incident were beaten to the task for lack of efficient equipment to fight the raging flames.

No causalities were reported. Investigations into the cause of the fire have been launched. Traders in the market have been left to ponder their next move as they count losses.
