A new level 4 hospital in Ruiru will be named after the fallen Commandant of the Kenya Prison Staff Training College.
The facility within the college compound will be renamed Wanini Kireri Magereza Hospital in remembrance and honor of the departed officer, according to Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.
The CS was speaking at the college during the launch of a new training course for prison cadet officers and other senior officers.
He said the first batch of 226 cadet trainees will be medical professionals who will be working at the hospital which also serves members of the public.
Paying his tribute to Ms Kireri, Matiang’i said she had a long-checkered career and served selflessly with diligence, hence the government’s decision to name the facility after her.
Noting that there were 12,500 applications for the cadet positions but less than 300 made it to the final list, the CS said the new course is a way of scaling up the professionalism in the prison service.
Saying it is now evident that the security sector has improved, he urged the officers to uphold the highest morals, maintaining that they carry the vision of the President.
Matiang’i reiterated that the program is part of the government’s progressive reforms in the country’s correctional services adding that the initiative was conceptualized purposely to position the Prisons Department on a par with other law enforcement agencies in terms of efficiency, responsiveness, and professionalism.
The interior CS maintained that the security sector has changed tremendously from where it was in the previous years to adapt to the new demands, constitutional changes and a dynamic environment that officers are operating in.
