NCCK Demands Health CS Nakhumicha To Resign

By Lauryne Akoth

The National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) has called for the resignation of health CS Susan Nakhumicha for failing to avert the ongoing strike by medics.

In a presser held by the committee on 3rd April, the clergy accused Nakhumicha of mismanaging the strike by doctors, clinical officers, and medical officers’ laboratory unions which has left Kenyans unable to access medical services.

NCCK Nairobi regional Chairman Reverent Alphonse Kanga indicated that the lack of medical care that has caused the death of some citizens is probable cause for the CS to step down. The union pointed out that while certain leaders may have the privilege of seeking treatment at private facilities, ordinary citizens suffer because they cannot afford the costs associated with such facilities.

They urged President Ruto to intervene and find a solution to end the healthcare workers’ strike. Health Cabinet Secretary has been on the spot with the doctors’ strike entering the third week. The president is yet to directly responded to this issue.

Several legislators including Embakasi East Mp Babu Owino, have threatened to impeach Nakhumicha over laxity in handling the issues tabled by medics. They cited that the President should handle the issue himself as the CS has proved to be incompetent.

Embakasi East Babu Owino on Wednesday revealed that legislators have already filed a notice of impeachment for the health CS, which will be tabled before parliament Next week.
