Police, Prison Officers to Get a Salary Rise this Month

By Debra Rono

President William Ruto on Wednesday morning announced his plan to increase the salaries of the police, prison officers and security agencies beginning this month.

Ruto while speaking in the statehouse during the swearing-in ceremony of the new Commissioner General of the Police Prisons Service Patrick Aranduh Mwiti, revealed that the officers will receive their first instalment of salary increments as part of the commitment that he made last year.

“In line with the commitment I made to our men in uniform, from this month we will be living up to our commitment to enhance the salaries of our policemen and prison officers…Starting this month they will receive their first instalment of their increment in salaries,” President Ruto said.

President Ruto also added that his administration together with the State Department of Housing is also working to ensure that prison officers live in decent housing across the country.

“We are undertaking a huge program to ensure that our prison service has decent housing, we will be working with you and your team to identify areas to work with the state department to ensure that our prison officers live in decent housing,” President William Ruto added.

Earlier this year the government announced it plans to increase salaries for the national police, prison officers and the national youth service (NYS) by 40% after receiving recommendations from the David Maraga-led task.

The task force had been appointed by President Ruto in December 2022, to spearhead reforms to be implemented in the three services.
