Two children killed as a swam of bees attack six families in Kitui

A swam of bees attacked a homestead in Kitui county and stung two children to death while four others are recovering at Kitui county referral hospital.
The bees emanating from a beehive near the home of mzee Kakolya Muthini in Ngangani village, lower yatta sub-county attacked four boys and their mothers killing on the spot Regina Muthini aged four years and her brother Kababa Muthini aged one and half years.
Their cousins Samuel and Eric Muthini aged eight and seven years escaped death by whisker and are admitted at Kitui level five hospital along with their expectant Mothers Faith Muthini and Joy Muthini.
Faith’s sister, Joy whose two children died said somebody provoked the bees which struck their home and attacked them .” We tried to fight them off but they the swam was big and overpowered us”, said Joy who suffered pains all over body.
” I watched helplessly as my two children breathed their last covered by a huge heap of bees”, said Joy who and her sister are admitted at the maternity wing.
She said both with her sister are expectant and when the bees struck, they could do little to chase them off and when neighbours arrived they only managed the save the lives of the two children.
Lower Yatta Deputy County Commissioner Jerald Mutuku while confirming the incident cautioned the residents against playing with bees during the dry spell.
He also ordered bee keepers to refraining from keeping beehives nearhomesteads as drought can drive them to households in search of water.
