The Global Digital Health Forum 2024 opened in Nairobi bringing together global stakeholders, policymakers, and technology innovators to explore the transformative role of digital solutions in achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

During the event, Dr. Deborah M. Barasa, the Cabinet Secretary for Health, emphasized the vital role of digital health in revolutionizing healthcare delivery both in Kenya and internationally.

“The establishment of the Digital Health Agency and the development of a Comprehensive and Integrated Health Information System are enabling us to digitize health records, improve data sharing, and empower patients to take charge of their healthcare journey,” Dr. Barasa stated.

The forum is based on the Digital Health Act 2023, which has established a robust framework for the incorporation of technology within Kenya’s healthcare system.

Dr. Barasa emphasized advancements in eliminating financial obstacles to healthcare access through programs such as the Social Health Authority (SHA) and the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), both of which seek to ensure that quality healthcare is accessible and affordable for everyone.

Nevertheless, obstacles such as the digital divide and the necessity for increased investment in infrastructure persist.

The Cabinet Secretary emphasized the importance of cooperative initiatives among governments, donors, and technology partners to tackle these challenges and promote equitable healthcare systems.

The event also spotlighted the African Digital Health Initiative, which seeks to leverage technology to revolutionize healthcare across the continent.

Dr. Barasa urged stakeholders to prioritize sustainability and equitable access as digital health solutions are scaled up to address pressing healthcare needs.
