Leaders from Garissa county continue to pressure president Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga to allow of the creation of additional constituency out of Ijara constituency.
Speaking last week when he received BBI signature booklets, Garissa governor Ali Korane said that they will continue pursuing the creation of Hulugho constituency to be curved out of Ijara constituency while in support of the process.
Immediate former national assembly majority leader and Garissa Township MP Aden Duale over the weekend said that he was ready to support the BBI if the county is awarded an additional constituency,
And addressing the press in Masalani town, Ijara constituency yesterday area leaders led the residents in ‘demanding for the creation of Hulugho constituency claiming it meets the required threshold in terms of size and population’.
Led by the livestock marketing council chair Dubat Amey, the leaders said that Ijara recorded a population of 134,000 persons in last year housing and population census.
The residents said that creation of Hulugho constituency was among the recommendations they presented to the BBI task-force.
“We wanted Iajara elevated to a county but because it seems it might not materialize, we asking for an additional constituency out of the 70 additional constituencies proposed in the BBI report,” Amey said.
“The entire North Eastern region was given only one constituency out of the 70. We appreciate the additional constituency in Mandera but the whole region cannot get one constituency. Its not fair,” he added.
They said they will walk from Masalani to Nairobi and present the memorandum to president Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga ‘to show how serious we are’.
