3 charged over fake KRA excise stamp

Following the expose of illegal business, three people have been charged over forging Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) excise stamps and counterfeiting various.

Stephen Njenga Kimani, Rhoda Muthoni Mungai and Joseph Wambugu Muchemi are accused to have made false excise stamps.

The three appeared before Nairobi Milimani Principal Magistrate, Joyce Gandani, where they denied the charges.

According to the court, the stamps are worth Ksh 5.4 million with an excise value of Ksh 822,150,000 shillings used for purpose of revenue by the KRA with intent to defraud.

The trial faces various charges included forging Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) excise stamps and counterfeiting various trade-marks from various wines and spirits companies for their own benefit.

Request to be bailed out was object by the prosecution with their plea expected to be heard and verdict given on Friday, on whether they will be released on bond or not.

“The incentive for the accused person to abscond trial is high,” prosecutor Daniel Karuri said.

The suspects also face multiple charges of counterfeiting trademarks contrary to section 381(a) as read with section 36 of the penal code.

They have denied that on unknown dates and unknown place, they counterfeited 85,000 Napoleon Gold Brandy bottle caps valued at Sh20 million.

Mr Njenga and Ms Muthoni are further accused of counterfeiting nine Legend Spirit bottle caps worth Sh 1,350.
