A team of 45 athletes will represent the central region in the forthcoming national trials ahead of the much-awaited world under-20 championships that are slated for August this year.
The youngsters were selected in an exercise that was graced by Athletics Kenya vice president Paul Mutui and other officials at Thika stadium, Kiambu County.
The counties of Nyandarua and Kiambu dominated the regional team with the former producing the best team of athletes in various disciplines among them long jump, triple jump, javelin, steeplechase, splinter races among others while Kiambu County emerged second.
Samuel Wanjohi who emerged the best in the walk-race discipline expressed optimism of winning the national trials and consequently winning a gold medal for Kenya.
Mary Gathithia, the Chief Executive Member in charge of sports from Nyandarua County who acclaimed girls for performing exemplary in the trials decried that the central region has been performing dismally due to lack of resources and failing to present their athletes during trials.
Her sentiments were echoed by George Thuku, the Chief Officer in charge of sports in Kiambu and who said that the governor James Nyoro said the county will support the selected teams with uniforms, training kits and other logistics.
The national trials will be held between 1st and 3rd July with central region expected to bring an intense competition in short distance races
