7,000 petty crime offenders were on Thursday 20th October 2016, during the Mashujaa Day celebrations at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos, set free by President Kenyatta.
The president said that the move will help decongest the correctional facilities and create room for those who have been leading in graft cases yet they have not been charged..
Kenyatta ordered that the prisoners, who have been serving jail terms across the country, be released with immediate effect.
