A total of 9 people perished and scores of others sustained injuries in a grisly road accident that involved a 42-seater mini bus near Katangi town along Machakos -Kitui road Monday evening.
Those who sustained injuries were taken to Machakos Level Five Hospital for treatment.
County Police Boss Patrick Lobolia said the accident happened after the driver of the vehicle lost control and rolled several times killing eight passengers on the spot.
One person succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment at the hospital. Machakos Executive Committee Member for Health Dr Daniel Yumbya said five victims of the accident were in critical condition.
Yumbya however said doctors were working round the clock to stabilize the patients.
Thirty other passengers sustained serious injuries and were rushed to various health facilities in the region.
According to Yumbya out of the 18 injured passengers booked at the Machakos Level 5 hospital, five sustained critical injuries.
According to reports, the ill-fated Matatu was loaded with charcoal during the Monday afternoon accident.
Witnesses said there were at least 30 sacks of charcoal scattered at the scene after the accident.
