IEBC changes to be initiated

National Assembly majority leader,Duale purports  to support the petition to disband the IEBC.Parliament may be forced to hold an impromptu special sitting over the IEBC to initiate changes to the commission amid heightened political exchange on who will oversee the next poll.

Aden Duale yesterday said plans by the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee to have a joint sitting with the Senate committee can only be approved through a special sitting. On Tuesday, Ainabkoi MP Samuel Chepkonga, who chairs the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee, wrote to Speaker Justin Muturi seeking a joint sitting with the Senate’s Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights over electoral laws and the IEBC.

“If the joint sitting takes off we will have to suspend the election laws. The initiative by Chepkonga and Busia Senator Amos Wako is the right structured formula in the constitution,” Duale said. He criticised Cord of using the 1997 IPPG strategy to have new commissioners, saying it was a ‘man-to-man agreement’ during President Daniel Moi’s regime.“They have written to the President seeking dialogue, if the meeting will be about IEBC then I can tell you President Uhuru Kenyatta has no role in the law on the IEBC. You can meet him on Eurobond, but not IEBC,” Duale said.

Duale said that Cord is in a panic mode and they have been inconsistent in their fight against the IEBC. Today they will say Korea, no one knows whether it is North or South, and tomorrow they will tell you children are being given IDs.

CORD protests against electoral agency to resume.Protests to remove IEBC commissioners will resume next week, Cord has said, noting it will not relent until chairman Issack Hassan leaves. ODM chairman John Mbadi said Cord leaders Raila Odinga, Moses Wetang’ula and Kalonzo Musyoka will lead the protests. Mbadi asked grassroots leaders to rally supporters to compel IEBC staff members across the country to leave office. He said the move was due to fears they have been compromised to rig elections.
