Parents who lost the lives of their children during Kyanguli Secondary school fire incident have pleaded with the head of State to intervene their compensation.
Sixteen years down the line, the aftermath of the incident is clearly written in the heart of victims, parents who lost their lives and those who received the horrific version of the calamity that left over 59 students dead.
Earlier on March 2016, High Court Justice Joseph Sergon said the school management, as the agent of the government, was negligent and failed to prevent the dormitory inferno on March 26, 2001.
Every affected family was awarded Sh650,000 in compensation for pain and suffering, total award accumulating to Sh40,950,000.
“I was woken up by students who had suffered burns. They knocked and banged the door of my house. There were screams and wailing in the school compound,” Mr Malingu during the hearing of the case on march 2016 recounted before Justice Joseph Sergon how they were woken up by students’ cries on the fateful night of March 26, 2001.
At 1.40am on March 26, fire swept through a dormitory of the Kyanguli Secondary School in Machakos, 30 miles (65 km) to the southeast of the Kenyan capital Nairobi.
