Mediators in doctors’ strike to table report before Court of Appeal today

Patients at Coast Genera waiting to be attended by doctors who are on strike, many are crying foul and want the doctors to resume at work, but the doctors have vowed to continue with the strike until their issues are solved .

Mediators from the Kenya Human Rights Commission and the Law Society of Kenya will present their report on negotiations to resolve the doctors’ strike at the Court of Appeal today. The talks were adjourned last week after a deadlock.

The appellate court had granted the mediators seven more days to conclude the negotiations on grounds that the parties were about to reach a solution. They have since remained tight-lipped on whether two contentious issues have been addressed.

The doctors want full implementation of the 2013 collective bargaining agreement, while the government is pushing for one that will be implemented from July. The other bone of contention is remuneration, as the government would have to pay accumulated arrears. Last week, the mediators said if there will be no change in positions by close of business Tuesday, they would report to the Court of Appeal.
