A woman died instantly after she was run over by a bus which had transported Jubilee supporters to a rally in Kombani, Kwale on Thursday. Nnjama Mwanzala was hit while rushing to board the vehicle which was leaving the venue of the meeting.
This was a few minutes after Deputy President William Ruto addressed the locals. The meeting was attended by Governor Salim Mvurya, Tourism CS Najib Balala, and Lunga Lunga MP Khatib Mwashetani.
Kwale woman rep Zainab Chidzuga and deputy governor Fatuma Achani were also present. Witnesses said the woman was hit by the vehicle’s side mirror. She will be buried at her Kwale home today.
On Tuesday, a vehicle belonging to Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho hit and injured one person in Changamwe. The vehicle was in Joho’s motorcade during his campaign rally when the accident happened. Joho halted campaigns to rush the man to the hospital.
“One of us has been hit by a car let us stop here and attend to him. We must see if he has been injured,” Joho said.
The incidents raise questions about the safety of rally attendees especially following the glaring violation of traffic rules during campaign tours. At some point during the meeting, a section of the crowd chanted pro-NASA slogans as the DP spoke.
“I have come here to ask you humbly to give us your votes,” Ruto said amid noise from locals chanting “NASA! NASA! NASA!”
Ruto asked Kwale residents not to gamble with their votes by supporting the opposition. He said their competitors have no clear agenda for Kenyans adding that they are only good at “empty rhetoric”.
“You think that guy of riddles can beat us for sure? As he continues playing his ball, we will have won,” the DP said.
Ruto also took a swipe at Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho for claiming that the government is planning to transfer Mombasa Port to Naivasha.
“They should go back to school because it is free of charge from class one to form four,” he said.
Mvurya said that it is only Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration that has helped Kwale people. He asked the residents to vote for Uhuru on August 8.
“We will not eat riddles. The manifestos of our brothers have nothing to help Kwale people.”
“Jubilee will tarmac Samburu-Kinango road, expand Ukunda airstrip and construct the first port at Shimoni,” he said.
Chidzuga said that Kwale experienced development during Jubilee’s first term in office.
