The incumbent (incoming) Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has promised to do what it takes to see Nairobi breathe a new lease of life.
During his first speech at Uhuru Park, Sonko said that he was happy that Kenyans actually believed in him to change the face of Nairobi County.
“I have never made a promise that I never kept, and this day I wish to give you my personal assurance. Nairobi will never be the same again from today,” said the incoming Governor.
“This important day is not historic because of the victory we celebrate today. Today is historic because there is finally hope for the people of Nairobi,” said Mr Sonko.
The former Nairobi Senator added that the city had been taken hostage by ‘unforgiving cartels’ and he is well prepared to deal with.
“I therefore stand before you today to declare that the old Nairobi has finally come to an end,” he said. “Today we join our hands to embark on a journey to fix a city that has badly been broken down, to a cleaner, greener, healthier and wealthier city.”
Addressing the matters of water shortage, Mr. Sonko noted that every Nairobian will have an access to clean water, healthy for drinking.
“There shall be enough water for all residents. We shall build enough markets for our small-scale traders and review licences to enhance ease of doing business. We shall support our youth, women and persons living with disabilities to start and grow their businesses, while creating employment opportunities.”
In his support, President Uhuru Kenyatta who was present during the inaugration and swearing in ceremony accompanied by his Deputy William Ruto pledged their support in transforming the county.
“Governor Sonko, this is an assurance that my government will work with you to change the city of Nairobi,” said President Kenyatta.
