The joint parliamentary committee investigating contaminated sugar in the country on Wednesday tabled the report of the inquiry into alleged importation of contraband and illegal sugar in the country.
The report which was tabled by the Chair of the committee Kanini Kega has recommended that Ethics and Anti corruption commission (EACC) and Director of Criminal Investigation (DCI) should investigate Treasury CS Henry Rotich,the then Industrialization CS Adan Mohammed, the then Agriculture CS Willy Bett.
South Nyanza Sugar Company limited (SONY) is also on spot as the joint committee wants the Director of Criminal Investigation (DCI) and Ethics and Anti-Corruption commission (EACC) to investigate them for alleged tax evasion of approximately Ksh 2.5 billion.
The Kanini led team recommends that all sugar that does not comply with the set standards of Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) should be destroyed within twenty one days of adoption of the report by the house.
The multi agency team which failed to appear before the parliamentary committee on the basis that it had not concluded investigation has now been given twenty one days after the adoption of the report by the house to publish its finding.
“Multi -agency team should speed up investigation into the unfit and contraband sugar and publish its findings within twenty one days, “it explains.
Further the joint parliamentary committee has recommended that importation of un-bagged bulk sugar so as to guarantee the safety of sugar imported into the country.
