The ministry of education will from September this year regulate how students spend their HELB loan. As opposed to the former days where the HELP loan money was deposited into individual students’ accounts, the ministry of education has kicked off the smartcard system where money will be deposited to an individual’s smartcard. Funds in the smartcard will be used mainly for purchase of stationary and paying for academic services unlike before where many students used the money for leisure.
The new directive will affect 69,151 students set to join universities in September this year.
