There were protests at Malindi Sub County hospital after a boda boda operator died of alleged negligence by medical personnel after he was knocked down by Kilifi county inspectorate vehicle.
Relatives and bodaboda riders who had responded to the emergency at the hospital said their kin died after waiting for over two hours without getting any assistance.
Anthony Musha the deceased who is a resident of Mtangani was knocked down by a speeding county vehicle that was chasing a matatu at Airport area along the Malindi Mombasa highway.
Musha together with two occupants who were on board sustain serious injuries and were rushed to Malindi sub county hospital for treatment.
Witnesses said Musha had suffered multiple fractures on his right leg and required urgent attention but upon arriving at the hospital they found only a clinical officer and a nurse.
Rama Charo Kabagazi a witness said it took over two hours for doctors to arrive and it was too late as Musha’s situation had worsened due to bleeding.
Speaking at the hospital he said efforts to get attention of the doctors went futile as they were nowhere to respond to the emergency.
“There is a lot of negligence at this facility, this is not the first time we are witnessing such a case, most of the time patients have to stay for a long time to get attention even during emergency,’’ he said
Vincent Sifa Karisa a relative of the deceased said it was unfortunate that a life had to be lost just because of negligence of doctors.
Some of the protestors could be heard saying most doctors have their own medical facilities that’s why they are always unavailable while others said they are subjected to buy drugs from outside.
Kilifi County CEC for health Dr. Omar Anisa dismissed claims that there was negligence at the hospital saying the medical personnel did their best to stop the bleeding from the patient and were waiting to take him for X ray when his condition worsened.
Speaking on phone Dr. Anisa said there was a medical superintendent and nurses who responded to the patient adding that it could be due to internal injury that led to the death.
“The patient had a fracture on the leg, doctors attended to him and bandaged him, they were waiting for him to stabilize to go to X-ray and later to theatre to begin check the extent of internal injuries when he succumbed,’’ she said.
The CEC health said the patient stopped bleeding but relatives surrounded him while protesting causing a commotion in the hospital.
Kilifi County Secretary Arnold Mkare on his part termed the accident unfortunate and revealed the County Driver had been arrested.
Mkare said the vehicle was not supposed to be in Malindi at that time as his office knew it was in Kilifi.
“I will officially give a statement regarding the accident at 11 in the morning, and shall also meet the family to condole with them,’’ he said.
