Over 90 students of St. Antony Naburereya Secondary School, Bungoma who sat for their 2018 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations are living in agony after failing to receive their results.
Gloom and anxiety has gripped teachers, parents and students after failing to receive the results even as the education stakeholders remain silent over the matter.
According to Damaris Wabomba, a parent of one of the affected students, they are still waiting for communication from the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) and the ministry of education.
“As parents, we don’t understand why the results of our students have been withheld for this long and the government on the other hand is not coming out to tell us what is happening. We only wait to see,” said Ms Wabomba.
She said that it was unfortunate for the results to be withheld when as parents they had heavily invested in the education of their children.
“I am very sad because I have invested in the education of my children for four years expecting the results but until now I have not received the results. We have started a new year and we still don’t have the results and our childrens’ future is affected by this delayed results,” she explained.
She wondered why the government was reluctant to release the results despite the marking exercise having taken two weeks.
“We do not understand the government has which plans because if the exams were marked in two weeks why is it so difficult to release the results to the students because it is their right,” she said.
Another parent, Hillary Wanyonyi said that the 93 students who sat for the examinations in the school last year were fast losing hope in life after failing to receive their results.
“Our children no longer have appetite for food because they believe they no longer have a future ahead of them. Some are not even sleeping in the house; we wonder where they go. We are even afraid that some may end up taking their lives through suicide,” said Mr Wanyonyi.
When reached for comment over the matter, the County Director of Education Jacob Onyiego said he was attending a meeting promising to get in touch later.
