A Mombasa Court has summoned Urban Police Station OCPD Eliud Monari to appear in court on Thursday over claims of a suspect assaulted by police officers.

Mombasa Senior Principal Magistrate Henry Nyakweba ordered the OCPD to appear before him on Thursday 7th March 2019, after an accused persons charged with robbery with violence claimed that police officers assaulted him while at a police station in Mombasa.

He is also accused of using violence to steal from Nabir Ahmed Omar his phone at Buxton area in in Mvita Sub County on 31st January 2019.

The accused person has not pleaded to the charges after the court ordered the police officers and the prosecution to ensure he is treated before he can take plea.

The accused person appeared in court while his head had a bandage and could not stand upright when his named was called, thus leaning at the dock.

The accused person claimed the police officers at Makupa Police Station threatened to kill him and even promised to kill if he was released.

“The police officers beat me saying they are going to kill me and told me they will make sure I don’t survive even if am released if taken to court,” said Ibrahim, the accused person.

He went ahead and named two police officers from Makupa Police Station, Ali and Joshua and claimed they were part of the officers who were assaulting him.

“The two officers are the ones I remember and know were part of those who were beating me at the station,” said the accused person.

SPM Henry Nyakweba complained and asked the prosecution why he had allowed the accused person to be brought in court at his situation.

He termed the act by the police officers as inhuman and said his rights as a Kenyan and human being were violated by the police officers.

“This is not a hospital and I don’t expect to have the accused person plead to the charges at his current state, am adjourning the other matters and ensure the accused person is taken to the hospital then call me. Make sure police officers use the main door to take him to the police vehicle,” said SPM Nyakweba.

Urban OCPD is expected to explain the reason behind the police brutality at Makupa Police Station as explained by the accused person before the court on Thursday.
