Traders at the Nyahururu open air market in Laikipia County have called upon the local county government to improve the state of the market.
The business people say that the market was too muddy especially when it rains and called on the county administration to assist them in solving the problem.
As you enter the main gate to the market the situation is visible where piles of rotten garbage with the traders saying that the state was bad for their business hence causing them huge losses as well as posing a serious health risk.
Ms Nancy Kamau, a tomato and cereal vendor at the market decried that the situation worsens saying when it rains as the market becomes filthy as it lacks proper drainage system.
Ms Damaris Njeri another trader at the market regretted that they were being forced to sell their commodities on the corridors of the streets outside the market as their goods were wilting upon exposure to direct sunlight.
The traders noted that the county administration was collecting a lot of revenue from the market as it was one of the main markets in the region saying that revenue collector were demanding cess from them on daily basis and hence the market should be improved.
The market is the main market in the region as it serves residents from Laikipia, Nyandarua and Samburu counties.
Mr Simon Muigai, the traders chairperson appealed to the county administration to help in erecting sheds at the market as we approach the long rain season.
He said that the long rains season was approaching and the county government should consider constructing a roof to prevent loss of property and allow smooth operations of the market.
He also appealed to the county government to facilitate lighting to allow the traders extend their day working hours.
