It’s very unfortunate that some people are out to bring down a country that our forefathers struggled to built up, fought and even died to have. 53 years old, we as a state should be striving to build on our economy, upgrade our people’s living standards and embrace more technology, the narrative of unity of purpose and the gospel of nationhood, peace and national cohesion.
However, the current leadership of our country seems more of leading us retrogressively rather than progressively. The seeds of tribalism and ethnicity seem to be more cultivated by our leaders than the people. It’s unluckly that, leaders keep reminding people of their tribes and encouraging them to vote on tribal grounds. The most recent being remarks by Nairobi – Bahati member of parliament Kimani Ngunjiri who threatened to evict all Luos from Nakuru County should the CORD coalition continue holding anti-IEBC protests which he claimed are leading to destruction of property owned by members of the Kikuyu community.
“Last week they destroyed property belonging to our people and if they will not stop the protests then we will ask all Luos to leave Nakuru,”Ngunjiri said.
“He has ferried people from Kisumu to Nakuru to destroy our property but we will not allow that to happen here because as leaders we must protect the properties of our people,”
These are remarks that specifically target on two communities and can obviously trigger hatred between the communities, not restricting it even to people residing in Nakuru. If his aim was to condemn the demonstrations then he ought to have addressed the matter from a different perspective not putting communities at war with each other.
Gatundu south MP Moses Kuria on the other hand on Sunday at the thanksgiving rally of a vernacular station radio presenter held at the Safaricom indoor stadium, Kasarani alluded that Raila Odinga should be ‘ assassinated ‘because he is a ‘ threat to the nation’. Immediately after these remarks, the clip of him saying this went viral on social media with Kenyans calling for his arrest and yet nothing has happened so far. Kuria said,
“Nyumba ni murathikiriria? Nindiraheiruo wira nimukuona ta nguhota? Matige guitigira, Muthama, na Orengo na nyina moke othe. Ni mui gitumi ni kii? No matume kimudu, giuke na mucinga, Raila rii rithathi ya mutwe akue mauge ni nii.No emenyerere, ona bebe no arie, tutigutorio thinaine ni mundu umue. Na arie bebe tumuthike jumatatu iria inge, maikie mahiga wiki imue na Kenya ithii na mbere . Okoruo ni haro me kwenda niyo me kuona. Muire raila ona bebe no arie na thii ihore na tuthii na no menda thayu moke tuarie tuikare wega IEBC yenda guthii ithii okoruo tii uguo mathii ma kiumaga ”
Loosely translated to…
” My people, I was appointed to speak with these people. Do you think I will deliver? They shouldn’t fear in fact let Orengo, Muthama and their mothers come. They want to stage a gunman tasked to kill Raila and then blame it on me. But he should be careful because he can still bite the bullet. We won’t be troubled by one person forever. He can as well bite the bullet and we bury him next Monday. His protesters will throw stones for just one week and life continues. If it’s war they want it’s what they’ll get. Tell Raila he can bite the bullet but if they want peace they should come and let us negotiate”.
These sentiments are not any good for our country and only bring people at logger heads with each other. It’s only fair that these leaders are brought to book to account for their deeds.
Our country is obviously bigger than any individual and we need that Peace and National cohesion both for our sake and the sake of posterity.
