Cemetery land funds hidden in budget proposal under coroner services unit

The Nairobi government’s search for a new graveyard has proved elusive ever since the Lang’ata Cemetery was declared full in 1996.

This has forced county officials to resort to all manner of ways to slip into the budget allocations to buy land for a new cemetery.

Unknown to residents who attended the public participation forum at City Hall two weeks ago, the government has set aside Sh221 million to buy a 120-acre burial site in Kitengela. However, the proposal is labelled a coroner services unit in the budget.

A section of the media only figured it out after they read about construction of a funeral parlour in the coroner services section. The Kajiado government last week said, however, it has no deal with Nairobi for the sale of 120 acres.
