Meru Speaker’s body guard shot dead

By Mercy Imali

One of the bodyguards attached to Meru County Speaker, Joseph Kaberia was on Sunday morning apparently shot dead by his colleague. Andrew Nabea, a driver sprayed Constable Samuel Munga with bullets. He also shot himself on the left leg. Constable Munga was pronounced dead at Neema Hospital in Kasarani.

The driver was dropping him off at his sister’s(Sarah Karambu) house at Kamiti Corner, Nairobi. Munga had called his sister at about 3 am and said he wanted to spend the night at her place. As she opened the gate, she heard gunshots from the car and rushed back to the house.

Neighbours called police who found Constable Munga still alive though he had been shot  several times in the chest. His pistol was intact and had all 15 bullets. The Speaker was not at the scene during the incident.

The police report said, “It appears the two had a misunderstanding that resulted in the shooting.”

They said Mr Nabea, who had a civilian firearm certificate, had spent 20 rounds of the ammunition and that the car had  one bullet hole on the side.

Mercy Nthuku, the Assembly’s communications director however contradicted police and said, “They went to pick dogs from Nabea’s sister’s house when the unfortunate incident happened.” Mercy added that the driver told her that a shootout ensued as he and Mr Muhaso were accosted by two men.

“He was seriously wounded. He had two gunshot wounds in one leg and a bullet lodged in the hip. It is not true that the two were arguing before the shootout,” she said.

The driver is a licensed gun holder and has since been arrested. 17 spent cartridges were recovered at the scene.
