Nakuru senator differs with governor Mbugua over Cord rallies ban

James Mungai, the Nakuru Senator has condemned a move by Governor Kinuthia Mbugua banning Cord meeting in the region.

He said it was unfortunate that the governor purported to ban specific people from visiting the town and outlawing associations where vernacular languages are spoken.

“It will be a dangerous precedent if some local leaders start exercising some powers that are neither provided for in the constitution or in any legally recognized statutes,” said Mungai.

While advocating for peaceful coexistence among various communities in the cosmopolitan County, the senator decried what happened on Saturday in Nakuru when some leaders and youths attempted to disrupt ODM meetings.

He added that the leaders should have provided information to police if there was evidence of any criminality instead of disrupting the meetings.

“We should not copy hooliganism from our political competitors but endear ourselves to others to create a critical mass of voters for the coming elections in 2017,” he said.

Mungai said Nakuru people were free to associate and express themselves in a language they feel comfortable with provided they did not break any law or plan crimes.

He assured residents, the country and the world at large that Kenya would remain peaceful.Mbugua was quoted in a section of the media disallowing Cord meetings in the cosmopolitan county.
