The Kenya Ferry Service has temporarily opened ferry operations at the Likoni channel after suspending operations for the better part of the morning.
According to the ferry service, the suspension was meant to allow rescue teams to carry out the recovery operation of a car that plunged into the Indian Ocean on Sunday with two occupants without interruption.
Search and rescue teams located the position of the vehicle on Tuesday but later suspended the operation to Wednesday due to bad weather.
Government spokesperson col. (rtd) Cyrus Oguna said poor weather, the strategic nature of the channel and heavy commuter traffic into Mombasa Island hindered the rescue efforts.
The recovery exercise is led by a team comprising of officials from the Kenya Navy, KPA, Kenya Fisheries Research Institute, Kenya Coast Guard Service and Private Contracted Divers.
