Voting exercise for the Kahawa Wendani ward by-election in Ruiru Constituency began one hour and a half later than expected with most of the aspirants calling on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to compensate the lost time.
Earlier, Jubilee Party candidate agents in the by-election were thrown out of various polling stations after they reportedly failed to produce requisite documentation.
They were however allowed in after presenting their documentation.
Some voters who woke up early in the morning to exercise their democratic right were also sent back after their names missed in the list of registered voters at the ward.
However, voting at the 24 polling stations continues without hitches.
While a low voter turnout was witnessed in most of the polling stations blamed for many locals being employees, 15,900, according to IEBC 2017 voter register are expected to cast their votes to determine their next member of county assembly representative.
The exercise is hoped to replace the late MCA Cyrus Omondi alias Gearbox who mysteriously died while on official duty in India on February 12 this year.
The position has attracted over ten candidates from Jubilee Party, People’s Empowerment Party, Maendeleo Chap Chap, PNU among others.
Some of the candidates are however vying as independent after they failed to clinch the Jubilee party candidature in October.
Raila Odinga’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) did not field a candidate for the ward seat and instead has been supporting Ochieng who won the highly contested Jubilee nominations.
