BUILDING OF LOW COST HOUSES IN MURANG’A TO COMMENCE IN THE NEXT THREE MONTHS

Two zones in Murang’a county have been identified for construction of low cost houses by the national government in partnership with the devolved unit.

The county administration has set about 10 acres of land along the busy Thika – Kenol highway to put the houses which will assist in provision of decent shelter to people not only from the county but also those working in Thika and Nairobi areas.

The second zone will be at Murang’a town where about 300 house units will be put to assist housing county and national government staff.

Yesterday, Housing and Urban Development Principal Secretary Charles Hinga visited the county in mission to identify areas where the low cost houses will be put up.

Hinga who was accompanied by Murang’a governor Mwangi wa Iria said the programme of building low cost houses is facing the challenge of getting land saying his ministry has entered into partnership with county administration in effort of getting land.

He said some counties already have identified areas where the national government through private investors will put up houses and enable Kenyans to own decent houses.

The provision of better housing, he added, is a major agenda by the government saying President Uhuru Kenyatta is committed to see many Kenyans own houses in urban centres.

He called upon Kenyans to register with the programme saying those who have registered will be given priority in issuances of the houses which he stated are cheap as compared to the ones being sold by private developers.

The areas near Kenol town where which have been identified for the construction of houses include Makenji and Kabati.

The governor said the area is prime and having the houses in place will spur the socio-economy of Murang’a south.

With availability of low cost houses along the Thika – Kenol highway, the governor said people working in Nairobi and its outskirts will get the opportunity to own homes.

He added the county government will establish a housing cooperative to help in registering locals so as to benefit from the housing scheme.
