Government through the ministry of Public Service, Youth and Gender Affairs Cs Margaret Kobia has begun a tree planting exercise in Mavoloni,Yatta sub county in Machakos County where 2000 trees were planted in a bid to ensure success in Greening Kenya project at National Youth Service (NYS)
Addressing the press after the exercise the CS revealed that they Target to plant at least 2000 trees in all 21 NYS units across the country
Prof. Kobia highlighted the need to plant trees in order to confront the effects of climate change and the increasing intensity and magnitude of weather-related disasters in the country that have aggravated conflicts over natural resources such as pasture and water.
She also noted that Covid-19 pandemic has led to the down scaling of the national tree planting activities
Also present at the event was NYS Director General, Ms. Matilda Sakwa who in her speech revealed that the Youth service had recruited 728 service men with agriculture skills who will boost the program
She further pointed out that the Service has been successful in fighting covid 19 in training colleges.
