Parliamentary committee on agriculture calls for audit of miraa funds in Embu.

Parliamentary committee on agriculture has observed that the committee will do research on the method and criteria used to share miraa crop reverberation fund in miraa growing counties. The committee said they will investigate the percentage of control of market by muguka and miraa. Speaking during a public participation the committee said they have received complain from Embu muguka farmers that they were played on when the money was being shared. The vice chairperson of the committee Cate Waruguru said that out of Ksh 1 Billion which was extended by jubilee government to boost miraa farming Embu farmers were only given Ksh 167 million which she said might have been small amount if in the market Muguka is above average in dominance of local market something must have gone wrong.

Waruguru also said the committee will do an audit to find out the cost of market centers build using miraa funds in Embu after farmers complained that the costs were inflated. The farmers also complained that some other markets were build near dump sites . While responding to cries by the farmers that some counties had banned sell of Muguka to their counties,the vice chairperson said that it is impunitive for a county to ban sale of legalized crop. Waruguru said recent ban of sale of Muguka in Kitui county as uncalled for and called upon Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu to lift the ban. Mbeere South member of Parliament Geoffrey Kingangi promised to table crop Act 2016 amendment which will recognize Muguka as a crop a type of miraa to enhance production.

The Mp said Muguka is a gold to many people but they were selling it with fear because there is know strong regulations to protect exploitation of the crop where in some places it was being referred to as illicit commodity. “We have been educated with miraa but this people are selling it with fear ,there is need to have an act to protect Muguka,”said Kingangi. Kingangi also urged the committee to consider helping miraa farmers from police officers who were harassing them and seeking bribe during transportation.
