Deaf and Dumb in Kakamega decry communication breakdown
The Deaf and dumb community in Kakamega have decried communication breakdown hampering access to services and challenges in their businesses.
The most affected are hawkers who hawk around the Muliro Gardens who have urged the government to avail sign language interpreters in offices that are critical and in hospitals.
They specifically singled out police stations, hospitals and government offices where they ask for availability of sign language interpreters.
They also urged the county government to educate some of the enforcement officers who harass them yet they cannot defend themselves due to inability to communicate verbally.
One of them who hawks soaks and footwear at the Muliro Gardens, Carlos Ondwasi, said that when they are sick they have to look for interpreters when seeking medication.
Speaking to KNA at Muliro Gardens in Kakamega, Francis Kwalanda, a motorbike operator, said they are optimistic that the government will support them to make their life easier.
