Fourteen teams have confirmed their participation in the Lake Region Secondary Schools girls Sevens rugby championship at Gusii Stadium on Friday.
Kenya Rugby Union development officer in charge of Lake Region Laban Bosire yesterday announced the seedings while saying the draw will be done at the venue.
Last year’s winners Bar Chando, runners up Nduru Girls, third placed Rianyanchabera and Asumbi have been seeded, Bosire said.
Other schools include Ahero Girls, Senior Chief Musa Nyandusi Kegati, Gakero ELCK, Nyabisawa Girls, Nyabigena Girls, Ulanda Girls, Ekerubo Secondary, Ndiiru, Sinyolo and Lwak Girls.
“Two groups will have four teams and two others three teams. This championship brings together 168 students and 28 coaches,” Bosire said.
Winners and runners up will represent the region at the Safari 7s in Nairobi in September.
“We expect a very competitive tournament. Teams are taking girls rugby seriously now,” he added.
Rianyanchabera coach Joseph Okong’o vowed they will lift the title.
“Last year we lost 5-7 to eventual winners Bar Chando. We are ready to win this one,” said Okong’o.
He however regretted that schools in Nyamira have not embraced rugby.
“I’m in talks with KRU to start under 14 rugby in the county. In Kisii, most schools have embraced rugby even from primary schools level,” added the KRU director.
