National government blamed for failure to stop rising prices of fuel, other essential commodities

The Chairman Religious Leaders in Tana River County Reverend Shadrack Mukolwe has blamed the National government following the rising prices of essential commodities such as fuel, maize flour, rice, sugar and cooking fat that the common mwananchi needs for survival in the country.

Speaking to the press yesterday at Hola Town, Rev. Mukolwe said in the past three months the prices of fuel has been rising from Sh120 per litre for petrol and Sh112 for diesel to Sh161 per litre petrol and Sh141 per diesel this month in Tana River County.

On food items, maize flour currently is selling at Sh110 per Kg, Rice Sh120 from Sh80 per Kg, sugar Sh130 from Sh110 per Kg respectively.

The Chairman appealed to the National government to control the prices of the essential commodities so that the common mwananchi could have some food on the table and avoiding suffering to the ordinary person.

He said, “during the era of the First president of Kenya the late Mzee Jomo Kenyatta the essential food commodities like maize flour, rice, sugar were being controlled by the government therefore, the traders were not able to control the prices at their own will”.

He further said it was unfair for the National government to raise the prices of petrol, diesel and Kerosene because Kenya made fuel discoveries in Turkana County that could be used and avoid importing fuel from the Gulf.
