Health Department mounts breastfeeding campaign in Trans Nzoia

The department of health in Trans Nzoia County has rolled out an enlightenment drive for mothers to promote wholesome health of infants through breastfeeding.

Addressing a sensitization forum at Kitale County Hospital yesterday, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Health Mrs. Clare Wanyama observed that breastfeeding was an important health activity for both infants and mothers.

“Infants who are breastfed for longer periods have lower infection morbidity and mortality rates coupled with higher Intelligence Quotient (IQ) compared to those who breastfed for shorter periods or not at all,” she submitted.

The CEC added beneficial effects of breastfeeding for mothers include protection against breast cancer, improved birth spacing and potential protection against diabetes and ovarian cancer.

To cater for lactating mothers working in the devolved unit, Mrs. Wanyama disclosed a policy document in the pipeline, which will see the special group allocated adequate time for breastfeeding.

Addressing the same event, County Nutrition Officer, Mrs. Lydia Kimani, said the health department had mounted a series of community outreach programmes across the County aimed at educating pregnant and lactating mothers on the importance of safe breastfeeding activity.

Nutritionists and Community Health Workers are spearheading the breastfeeding campaign drive.

“With support from trained counselors, we are currently educating pregnant and breastfeeding mothers on diet,” Mrs. Kimani said.

The official called on men to promote breastfeeding activities both at home and places of work.
