DEADLOCK OVER FIRED UNIVERSITY WORKERS

Negotiations for payment of terminal benefits for the laid-off   Kisii University workers with their former employer appear to have hit a deadlock.

Kenya Universities Staff Union(KUSU),the workers union failed  for the second time  to hammer an  agreement  with the Kisii University on how the retrenched  could receive their dues as awarded by the Labour Relations and Industrial  Court amounting  Ksh. 625 million.

The union secretary general, Dr. Charles Mukhwaya, claimed the employer as yet to indicate how the money could be paid out to the 204  workers rendered redundant  about two years ago.

According to Mukhwaya, each worker was entitled to terminal  benefits equal to seven months gross earning.

But Kisii University insisted  it was willing to pay Ksh.4 million per month  translating  into 13 years.

The  SG  called for a conclusive position by the university as ordered by the court  to be communicated to  the union  seal  the amicable solution.
