Residents appeal for protection from Water cartels

A section of residents from Evurori Ward in Mbeere North Sub-county, Embu County have appealed to the National and County governments to protect them from powerful individuals in government they say have interfered with their group activities of providing water to members.

The residents who came together to form a CBO that has provided members with Water from Mt Kenya in the semi-arid area of Mbeere Said a cartel individuals who wield power infiltrated their CBO despite being non members.

They accuse them of diverting water meant to assist poor members who came together for the sake of uniting to fight hunger.

The CBO Members have benefited with grants from different entities totalling to about Sh 35million and have been able to connect water for irrigation to their homes.

The officials say some members have been without water despite the ravaging drought that has seen many crops dry up for lack of water.

Those with water have been able to change their fortunes and can do irrigation farming at any time of the year.

Embu county is among 23 other counties that have earmarked by the national government as most hit by the drought.

Governor Cecily Mbarire earlier while appealing for relief food said more than 100,000 people were facing starvation in the county.
