Team of Eight parliament to investigate school riots unveiled

A team of eight people has been unveiled by the government of Kenya tasked to try and establish the cause of the rampant strikes and arson incidents at various secondary schools that has been hitting the news headlines.

The team comprises of: Claire Omolo (Secretary of Administration in the Officer of the President), Lilian Muli (Assistant inspector General of Police), Patrick Mugo (Assistant Inspector General in the Criminal Investigations Department), and Senior Assistant Director in the Ministry of Education Charles Khayira.

Others in the list include James Kairu (Senior Assistant Director in the Ministry of Education), Loise Nyasenda (Senior Deputy Director in the Teachers Service Commission), Educationist Gracie K. Mullei and Lt. Col. (Rtd) F.C. Mugambi.

The team will “vigorously comb the =areas affected by incidents of school unrest, and it is supposed to commence work immediately as it has been directed to table a report on the findings to the Ministry of Education and the interior ministry within the coming 30 days.

“The report should clearly outline measures to be taken to forestall future cases of unrest and also spell out individuals/parties that will be held responsible for the school fires, including through prosecution and surcharging of suspects,” a statement signed by Cabinet Secretaries Fred Matiang’I and Joseph Nkaisserys read.

The team has also been directed to provide comprehensive report for all 2016 cases of fire, review recommendations of past task forces on student unrest, review implementation status and propose methodology of effecting the balance of proposals.

“In the meantime, directions already issued on containing indiscipline in schools and holding culprits to account must be heeded. The government expects deeper positive community involvement in the protection of learners and property,” further read the statement.
