Sports Ministry Strikes Deal With KRA, Kenyan Athletes To Benefit

The government has struck a deal with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) to end what athletes have reportedly termed as double taxation upon winning any sports competitions abroad.

Sports CS Ababu Namwamba disclosed this development to the 5th estate, during the unveiling of the team leading the #RoadToParis Olympic preparations at the ministry’s Talanta Plaza headquarters yesterday.

The CS noted that his ministry worked closely with KRA to mitigate the issue for athletes who achieve success on the international stage, with the sole aim of shielding Kenya’s top brand ambassadors and ensuring that excessive taxes do not diminish their hard-earned winnings.

“By advocating for this cause, my Ministry strives to uphold principles of fairness and equity, recognizing the dedication and sacrifices made by athletes,” explained CS Ababu.

The Cabinet Secretary stressed that this effort aligns with the Ministry’s #TalantaHela goal of nurturing sporting talents through effective partnerships, creating a supportive environment for athletes to excel on and off the field.

“This underscores the government’s commitment to realize the #TalantaHela vision of not only celebrating talents but also transforming them into tangible monetary value towards empowering athletes to maximize their potential and contribute to Kenya’s sporting legacy,” he quipped

The event included a detailed update on Team Kenya’s ceremonial kit, being designed by talented Kenyan designers. The Cabinet Secretary emphasized the importance of inclusivity, transparency, and openness in every investment made for the Paris Olympic project.

Highlighting the significance of showcasing Kenya’s heritage and promoting the country, the Cabinet Secretary stressed the need for a kit that reflects Kenya’s diverse culture while staying trendy.

“The game is about showcasing the finest aspects of Kenya’s heritage as we promote and market our country. Therefore, it’s crucial to create a kit that embodies Kenya’s diverse heritage while also being fashion-forward,” he noted.

National Olympics Committee of Kenya SG Francis Mutuku added: “We have created a pathway towards creating the best kit through our formed opinion team that is looking at the designs. We are open to public consultation and engagement throughout the process.”
