A Primary School in Kakamega County is in trouble after it emerged that the institution has been circumcising pupils without their parents’ consent.
According to agitated parents at Shikomari Primary School in Navakholo Constituency, the head teacher has allowed a Non-Governmental Organization9.69 to circumcise their children without their knowledge.
One of the parents disclosed that the male pupils were set apart from their female counterparts and checked to see whether they had undergone the cut. Those who were found to be uncircumcised were ushered into a vehicle and taken to the health centre where they would be initiated.
The parents who hail from different cultures lamented that the act had gone against their traditions demanding the Ministry of Education to weigh in on the matter.
One of the pupils who was reportedly taken for the cut stated that his wound was infected during the exercise.
Parents who demanded to speak to the head teacher on the issue said he was turning them away with abusive comments.
“He is turning away parents using abusive language instead of explaining what exactly happened. Next week they have exams and the students can’t sit exams while in pain,” the parent said.
The school’s head teacher John Musungu has however denied the claims saying the NGO had only circumcised pupils whose parents consented.
“We have an NGO that circumcises the children for free but only for willing parents and willing children. So they came and registered the pupils in school. However one pupil lied that his parents had given consent,” he said.
