Premier league ghosts haunt Liverpool in 2-1 loss to Roma

Liverpool pre-season tour of the United States ended yesterday in a horrific 2-1 International Champions Cup defeat to Roma.

Despite Jurgen Klopp naming a strong side, with starts for Sadio Mane, Georginio Wijnaldum and Daniel Sturridge, Roma stole the match and outplayed the reds.

The Serie A side went in winning celebrations after Eden Dzeko and Mohamed Salah goals canceled Sheyi Ojo’s goal in St Louis.

Former Manchester City striker Dzeko had already missed two good chances when he fired into the bottom corner after a fine turn just before the half-hour mark.

The Reds were level before the break, though, when Ojo headed home from James Milner’s corner. But the decisive moment came just after the hour when Salah restored Roma’s lead as he poked home after Simon Mignolet had saved Dzeko’s header.

Klopp admitted his players were tired but criticized a lack of discipline in the team.

“The gaps between the players were too big, I could have played there,” he said. “I hate games like this. The problem is every offensive action from Roma was a chance. And that makes absolutely no sense. That’s not allowed.”
