National Assembly on Thursday, 2nd May 2024 came to a standstill during the debate on the impeachment of Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi.
This comes after Kathiani MP Robert Mbui urged the members to demonstrate their leadership and unwavering commitment to combating corruption by impeaching the CS.
“Today we have an opportunity to cast a vote that is going to tell Kenyans on whose side we are. Are we on the side of the people who make phone calls in the night or are we on the side of the farmer that brought you to the house?” asked the MP.
Robert Mbui asked Kenyans to watch those who vote against the impeachment to vote them out in the 2027 elections.
“Kenyans watch your Members of parliament and how they vote, those that vote against this bill are people that must go home,” he added.
The MP’s statement made a section of the members of parliament stand up from their seats while others joined them on the floor chanting Linturi Must Go.
The National Assembly Speaker Wetangula had a hard time bringing the House to order as the chants dominated the House.
“Order honorable members, Order! Will you take your seats?” he asked.
Moses Wetangula went on to call out some Members including Githunguri MP Hon. Gabriel Kogo Kisumu West MP Hon. John Olago and Women Representative for Busia warning them of being excluded from the house should they continue with the disruptive conduct.
The speaker asked the members to be orderly and that they will make their point through the vote.
“You are inviting the chair to exclude you if you continue with this rowdy behavior. You are supposed to act in an honorable manner,” he warned.
“You carry the honour to this House for the people who elected you not by not shouting, Kofi Anan always said I have a soft voice and a powerful message,” he added.
