The African National Congress (ANC) has announced that it will convene a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting to determine the composition of the government.
“Our National Working Committee (NWC) and NEC meetings are proceeding as scheduled,” stated the official announcement.
The statement further elaborated, “The ANC, under the leadership of Secretary General Comrade Fikile Mbalula, is engaging with the Mass Democratic Movement, various interest groups, and other political parties to foster national unity.”
Despite winning elections since the end of apartheid in 1994, the ANC’s coalition has seen its majority dwindle from 57.5% to 40.2% this year, amid growing public frustration over unemployment, inequality, and persistent power outages.
On June 3rd, the ANC held discussions with internal members, other parties, and stakeholders to explore the best ways to form national and provincial governments that truly represent the people’s will.
In another statement, Secretary General Mbalula affirmed that the ANC will continue to act responsibly and progressively, always prioritizing the interests of South African citizens.
“The ANC rejects any false reports aimed at creating divisions within our NEC. We are united and committed to fulfilling the mandate given to us by the people to build a better life for all,” it clarified.
The ANC urged the public to disregard any information not issued through their official channels, overseen by spokesperson Comrade Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri.
They also announced that the media would be invited to a briefing following the next NEC meeting.
