In a bid to ensure that prepaid customers retain access to electricity services, Kenya Power has launched a comprehensive media campaign called ‘Update Token Meter Yako’, targeting 7.4 million prepaid customers.
This initiative comes as a reminder to customers to update their token meters by August to avoid disruptions in their power supply.
“To ensure the success of this exercise, today, Kenya Power has launched a media campaign dubbed ‘Update Token Meter Yako’, targeting all its prepaid customers,” said Kenya Power.
In a statement issued by Kenya Power, the campaign will provide all the necessary information about the exercise to the targeted customers, allowing them to promptly adjust their meters upon receiving the notification from Kenya Power.
“Customers will receive two codes from Kenya Power when they purchase tokens. They will be required to key the codes to their meter following the steps indicated in the SMS before loading the new token,” said Director Joseph Siror.
“In other instances, the Company will send the codes directly to the customers who haven’t purchased tokens to notify them to update their meters. The process is simple and free,” he added.
According to Kenya Power, the upgrade is a part of an ongoing global exercise that targets all prepaid meters that use the Standard Transfer Specification (STS) which is a universal method for transferring tokens to prepaid meters while guaranteeing the security of the generated tokens.
The power company has stated that the update will have no impact on the electricity tokens that have already been loaded into power meters.
Customers are are to load any tokens they have purchased in the past before updating their meters as failure to do so will render the tokens invalid.
Kenya Power has commenced the process of updating the software for all prepaid token meters.
The Prepaid meter update exercise is free of charge.
“Ukipata SMS from Kenya Power, weka code 1 ku-Reset, and code 2 ku-Update your token meter. It’s that simple, and FREE!” stated Kenya Power on their X page.
