In a surprising turn of events, Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota’s 5th District has become a vocal advocate for the peaceful resolution of the ongoing protests in Kenya.

The protests in Kenya started in response to rising costs of living, increased taxes, and widespread unemployment.

The situation escalated when the government announced further austerity measures, in line with the stringent policies set by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Representative Omar has raised alarm over austerity measures announced by the government  in line with the stringent policies set by the International Monetary Fund(IMF).

In a statement release, Omar linked the harsh economic times experienced in Kenya as occassioned by IMF austerity measures affecting the vulnerable people in the country.

“It’s also crucial to recognize that the International Monetary Fund’s austerity conditions have contributed to the economic hardships facing Kenyan citizens. These measures often disproportionately affect the most vulnerable populations and can exacerbate social unrest,”  said Rep Omar.

Omar has also expressed concern over the excessive use of force by police officers during the 2024 anti-finance bill protests calling for an urgent action on the matter.

“I am deeply concerned about the escalating violence in Kenya in response to nationwide protests.Reports of police using live ammunition, employing excessive force, targeting journalists, and forcibly disappearing protesters are deeply troubling and must be immediately addressed,” noted Omar.

“The right to peacefully protest is enshrined in Kenya’s constitution and must be respected by authorities. The use of deadly force against civilians exercising their democratic rights not only violates basic human rights but also undermines Kenya’s democratic foundations,” added Omar.

Omar voiced her support for Kenyans in their struggle against the austerity measures imposed by the IMF and  police brutality.

“It is imperative that protestors remain peaceful as they continue to demand change.I stand in solidarity with the people in the wake of both state violence and IMF -imposed austerity measures. The Kenyan government must immediately disclose the location and condition of all those who have been taken into custody or disappeared, cease the use of excessive force, respect the right to peacefully protest, and continue to engage in meaningful dialogue to address the legitimate concerns of its citizens,” read the statement.

Ms. Julie Kozack, IMF Director of Communications, also stated its concern on the current situation in Kenya.

“We are deeply concerned about the tragic events in Kenya in recent days and saddened by the loss of lives and the many injuries. Our thoughts are with all the people affected by the turmoil in the country.

Additionally following the Finance Bill 2024 protests experienced in Kenya in the previous week IMF Director of Communication reassured its support to Kenya to help it overcome the difficult economic challenges and improve its economic prospects and the well-being of its people.
