Japhet Koome Resigns from the Office of the Inspector General of Police

Japhet Koome has resigned from the Office of the Inspector General of Police.

In a statement sent to the media and public by the State House Spokesperson Mr. Hussein Mohammed, the President accepts the resignation of Koome as the Inspector General on Friday 12th July 2024.

“His Excellency Hon. William Samoei Ruto, Ph.D, CGH, President and Commander in Chief of the Defence Forces, has on this 12th day of July 2024, accepted the resignation of Eng. Japheth N. Koome, MGH, as the Inspector General of the National Police Service,” says the statement in part.

“To facilitate the transition within the top leadership of the National Police Service (NPS) and Kenya Prison Service (KPS) our primary homeland security agencies, the head of state and Government has announced Executive Order No. 7 of 2024,” the statement reads.

“President William Ruto effects changes within the Senior Ranks of the National Police Service and Kenya Prisons Service following the resignation of I.G Eng. Japhet Koome,” State House Spokesperson wrote on X.

Mr. Douglas Kanja, the current deputy Inspector General has been designated to the position of the acting Inspector General of Police pending nomination, parliament approval and appointment of the new Inspector General.

Mr. Eliud Langat has been designated to the position of acting deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service while Mr. James Kamau has been assigned to the position of the acting deputy Inspector General of the Administration Police Service.

Mr. Langat will serve in an acting capacity pending the nomination, parliamentary approval, and appointment of the next Inspector-General.

The President also appointed Mr. Patrick Mwiti Arandu as the Commissioner General of Prisons.

Mr. Arandu takes over from Brigadier (Rtd) John Warioba, who is proceeding on terminal leave pending the end of his tenure of office.

The President also redeployed Mr. Noor Gabow within the Public Service.

Other senior appointments include Mr. Ranson Lolmodooni, who was appointed Commandant, of the General Service Unit (GSU), while Mr. Gilbert Masengeli was appointed Commandant, of the Administration Police Training College (APTC), Embakasi.

Mr. William Yiampoy is the new Director of Operations, at Police Headquarters, and Mr. Kainga Mathiu is the new Commandant of, the National Police Leadership Academy (NPSA), Ngong.

The changes take effect immediately.
