In a bid to attain excellence in correctional services, the State Department for Correctional Services is exploring strategic partnerships with key stakeholders.
Speaking during a meeting with the European Union (EU) Ambassador to Kenya Henriette Geiger and Programme Manager Line Urban, Correctional Services Principal Secretary Dr. Salome Beacco emphasized the importance of collaboration to modernize Kenya’s correctional facilities and enhance rehabilitation programs for inmates.
The meeting, held at the State Department headquarters, focused on leveraging the EU’s expertise and resources to improve the conditions within Kenya’s correctional institutions. Dr. Beacco highlighted the critical role of sound partnerships in the criminal justice system, noting that such collaborations are essential for the effective operation and transformation of correctional services.
“Our Correctional facilities are in dire need of modernization to improve the living conditions of the inmates and ensure effective rehabilitation. Partnering with EU will bring in professional expertise which is essential for this transformation,” Dr. Salome said.
EU Ambassador Henriette Geiger expressed the EU’s willingness to support Kenya’s efforts in improving its correctional facilities.
The support includes implementation of a comprehensive Information and Communication Technology (ICT) system that will see inmates’ records and administrative processes digitized as well as enhancing vocational training and rehabilitation programs for offenders.
The PS observed that a suitable ICT infrastructure would facilitate operations, monitor inmate progress, and enhance the overall management of correctional facilities, thereby increasing efficiency.
“An efficient ICT system will not only enhance internal processes but also facilitate better coordination with other government departments, as well as support our efforts in rehabilitating inmates and preparing them for reintegration back into society,” added the PS.
The strategic partnership with the EU marks a significant step towards transforming Kenya’s correctional services.
