By Dorothy Musyoka

In a significant move to bolster HIV management and prevention efforts in Kenya, Dr. Rose Wafula, Head of the National AIDS & STI Control Program (NASCOP), and Dr. Waqo Erjesa, Chief Executive Officer(CEO) of the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA), met with their respective HIV Commodity and technical teams.

The meeting focused on ensuring a steady supply and distribution of HIV commodities across the country.

The commodities include Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP), Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), condoms, needle & syringe exchange programs, & opioid substitution therapy. Ensuring the uninterrupted availability of these health products is crucial to the HIV response.

During the meeting, it was confirmed that there is a continuous and stable supply of essential HIV commodities.

“To further ensure uninterrupted services, KEMSA has launched a 72-hour Rapid Result Initiative (RRI), which will be operational across all counties over the next 72 hours. This initiative aims to guarantee continued access and distribution of crucial HIV products,” stated MOH.

According to the ministry of health, over 1.3 million people in Kenya are on antiretroviral (ARV) treatment to maintain viral suppression.

In addition to ARVs, these individuals benefit from a variety of prevention services and commodities, including Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP), Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), condoms, needle and syringe exchange programs, and opioid substitution therapy.

Dr. Wafula emphasized the importance of collaboration between NASCOP and KEMSA.

“This partnership has significantly advanced Kenya’s efforts in managing and preventing HIV,” Dr. Wafula said.
