The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) participated in an initiative aimed at combating illegal fishing practices in Lamu.

The destruction exercise, conducted at the Mokowe Sub County Hospital incinerator aimed at eliminating a significant stockpile of illegal fishing nets.

This included 99 monofilament nets and 2 beach seine nets, collectively valued at approximately Ksh. 1.9 million.

“The destruction of these nets followed a legal application filed by the ODPP office, which led to the Kenya Coast Guard Service obtaining orders for their disposal,” stated the ODPP on X.

This initiative highlights a dedicated effort to combat the use of illegal fishing equipment that poses a threat to the marine ecosystem.

During the event, Prosecution Counsel Ahmed Omar Mohamed, representing ODPP County Head Mr. Peter Birir, highlighted the ODPP’s steadfast commitment to enforcing laws against illegal fishing practices.

Mohamed underscored the necessity of not only destroying illegal nets but also initiating a robust crackdown on individuals and entities involved in the supply of such prohibited fishing gear.

The ceremony was attended by distinguished representatives from the Judiciary and Kenya Coast Guard Services, along with officials from Lamu County and other stakeholders.

This collaborative endeavour signifies a collective commitment to safeguarding marine life and enforcing environmental regulations.

“This collaborative effort reflects a unified stance in preserving marine life and upholding environmental regulations,” added the ODPP.
